Art, Wine, Beer, Tribute Bands…Alameda’s Art & Wine Faire Packs Park St. This Weekend!

Art, wine, beer, Lockeford sausages, hand-dipped corn dogs, gyros, BBQ oysters, teriyaki chicken skewers, curly fries, mango sticks, three music stages. You don’t want to miss the 34th Annual Downtown Alameda Art & Wine Faire! Experience island fun for two days on Sat/ Sun, July 28/29, 10am to 6pm on Park St in Alameda. Admission is FREE!

Sip local craft beer (Alameda Island Brewing Co. ) and wine (Rock Wall Wine Co. ) and listen to live music as you explore Alameda’s historic downtown district. Two Faire sponsors will be sampling their brand new products. Try a sample of Coconut Cay SkyJuice at the corner of Park and Central right next to the Coconut Cay Local Alameda Stage or Dr. Hops Kombucha Beer by the carnival rides near Walgreens at Park Street and Buena Vista Ave.

Alameda Alley is a new addition. An expanded area on Central Avenue will be bursting at the seams with an enlarged outdoor dining area and local talent on the new third stage programmed by legendary Alameda musician Jim Parodi and sponsored by Coconut Cay SkyJuice. Also on tap (literally), will be East Bay MUD’s “Water on Wheels” trailer filled to the brim with cold, delicious water so you can stay hydrated for free. Just bring your own reusable water bottle and fill ‘er up! Don’t have a water bottle? With a donation you can pick one up across the way from the Alameda Police Department.

While enjoying the bands, take time to browse the plethora of arts and craft booths (over 250 vendors) that will be displaying and selling fanciful items. You’ll find ceramics, metal art, paintings, photography, woodcrafts, toys, handbags, clothing, jewelry, and more.

The Music Rocks! Now with three stages, each day offers continuous live music as Bay

Area favorites perform classic rock, bluegrass, funk, jazz and soul. Featured bands include some of the area’s most popular tribute bands: Swingtown (Steve Miller & Peter Frampton), Celebration Day (Led Zeppelin), Fog City Swampers (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Long Train Running (Doobie Brothers), Life in the Fast Lane (Eagles)and Zebop (Santana). Kids’ Area. An interactive area for kids and their families has been created on Alameda Ave. with bounce houses, games, face painting, bungee jumpers and that wacky attraction – Waterballerz! Carnival rides will be set up – from Classic Teacup Spinners to Frog Hoppers.

Shop Downtown Alameda! You’ll find a unique variety of fabulous food and drink establishments, charming shops, friendly services, and fun things to do in the more than 400 businesses located here. Many of the shops will be offering special discounts.

Ride Your Bike to the Festival. Free, secure bike parking will be in the parking lot of Vietnam House, located at 1527 Park St, right across from Alameda Bicycle.

Sail & Swim in Alameda @ Encinal Yacht Club’s Summer Sailstice Celebration on Sat., June 23

WHERE: Encinal Yacht Club – 1251 Pacific Marina in Alameda

WHAT: Everyone is invited! If you’re a seasoned sailor or curious about sailing the Bay, you can explore the world of sailing, as Encinal Yacht Club once again hosts Summer Sailstice on Sat., June 23, 2018, from 11am- 5pm at 1251 Pacific Marina in Alameda. It is definitely a family event with lots of fun activities around their famous swimming pool, as well as in the Estuary and free boat rides! Summer Sailstice is a worldwide celebration of sailing. (Scroll to bottom for Event Schedule.) Here’s what’s happening June 23.

At the Docks: Classic boats on display – Tall Ship, Master Mariners; a Small Boat Regattas; Junior Sailing and public boat rides, plus a one-class cruise-in.  The Encinal Docks will be very busy with boaters, racers and all things sail and boating this day.

At the Pool: Life Jacket Races, Boat Building Competition, Gutter Races and live music throughout the day…food and drink will abound.

Speakers: Great storytelling sailors will unveil their adventures, both past foibles/successes and future dreams. Informational seminars relevant to boaters and the boating community will be available.

Emeryville & Alameda Marinas Fight Pollution with Ocean Vacuums!

Join Safe Harbor and Seabin Project to Celebrate New Seabins!

Here’s how it all started. Two life-long surfer friends from Australia, appalled by the plastic and debris pollution in our waters, set out to clean up the ocean. They wanted to create a garbage bin that would collect the floating plastic. This got them started cleaning up the marine environment, one marina at a time. How? With the V5 Seabin, a floating vacuum filter device they invented that works like an ocean vacuum 24/7 continuously collecting floating debris – plastic bottles, paper, oil, fuel, detergent and more. Over the last two years Seabin Project co-founders Pete Ceglinski and Andrew Turton secured partners for a pilot study into the effectiveness of the seabin.

Safe Harbor, the world’s largest marine management company, is one of six partners in the Seabin Project pilot study with their first location in Cabrillo Isle Marina in San Diego, CA. “We had a section of water in our Cabrillo Isle marina which had earned the nickname of ‘scum alley’,” commented Kate Pearson, Safe Harbor’s West Coast Regional VP. “It was the downwind corner of Harbor Island that had no natural flushing…we became

a Global Pilot Partner and installed the first Seabin in the US. The Seabin blew our expectations out of the water! The small, compact and quiet machine hums away in ‘scum alley’ and we have pulled 1000 lbs. of trash this first year out of it. We also sort and document the trash, reporting our findings back to the Seabin team so we can look at source issues and educational programming for schools.”  The pilot, part of Safe Harbor’s commitment to protecting the marine environment, proved successful and now Safe Harbor is bringing the Seabin Project to the San Francisco Bay Area’s Emeryville Marina and Alameda’s Ballena Isle Marina.

“We’re proud to introduce Seabin as an innovative, cutting-edge technology that respects and protects the marine environment,” says Kate. “It’s versatile, small in size, cost-effective and functionally-effective – everything our marinas and boaters have been asking for.” In an  interview on CBS, San Diego,  she said that the most common items they pull out of the seabin every day is cigarette butts, pens and straws.

The Seabin Project has  evolved into a comprehensive research, educational and technology initiative with worldwide reach, including educational tools for students to get on board. The Seabin Project team believes that each child that learns to dispose of litter properly will grow to be one less source person for pollution of our oceans and waterways. Currently, according to Jambeck Research, 8.1M tons of mismanaged waste enters our oceans every year.

Some cool facts:

  • Each device collects about 60 pounds of debris per day – that’s about 1,000 pounds of pollution/yr.
  • It’s a cost-effective and 24/7 alternative to the “trash boats” traditionally used to clean up marinas.
  • Currently attached to the dock, the Seabin Project team is developing new technologies to get it off the dock and into the water.

Here’s how it works:

  • The seabin is installed in a specific problem debris area, attached to a dock.
  • Water is filtered from the surface and passed through a catch bag inside the Seabin, powered by a submersible water pump.
  • Water is then pumped back into the water leaving the litter and debris trapped in the catch bag. Larger pieces of plastic may attach themselves to the bin.
  • Marina operators need to empty the catch bag at least twice a day, as it holds up to two pounds.

The public is welcome at the two fun launch events.

According to the owners of Honour Brand, this is their third year in the Art & Wine Faire and they will be featuring Bay Area Brewery tees and another set that celebrates the history of the Nisei baseball team called the Alameda Kono All-Stars. “We love meeting folks,” says co-owner Tara Eglin, “and telling them the stories behind our tees.We especially like the Alameda Art & Wine Faire because we have items that are specific to Alameda and it’s history which resonates with residents and fair goers.”
