American Magic Team USA takes the win in the Louis Vuitton prelim regatta!

NYYC’s American Magic – who had suffered a serious nosedive in practice racing the day before – was up against INEOS Britannia who looked fired up for the day and the racing to come.

After a blistering start from Ainslie and a brilliant first cross by the British out to the right-side of the course, the Americans came straight back after finding more pressure and nice big wind shift to lead at the windward mark.

Although the first downwind leg saw two close crosses, the US team maintained their lead at the leeward gate and were never headed again, going on to record a win by a margin of 29 seconds.

Tom Slingsby, helmsman on NYYC American Magic, was happy with how the opening race against INEOS Britannia unfolded saying:

“It was a tight race all the way. There didn’t seem to be much in it in terms of boat speed. Once we were ahead, we were able to protect the right and it felt like we were making little gains all the time.”

“We have won our first race and although there is a long way to go, it’s good to get off the mark as you don’t want to be waiting a couple of days to get your first win. So, we’re off and running and we’ve got some big matches coming in the next few days.”

A great day for Team USA in Barcelona.

SailGP Sails the Bay at Full Speed this Weekend!

It’s full speed ahead for SailGP’s eight-nation fleet as they head into Season 2’s home stretch. On March 26-27, vying for the highly coveted $1 million top prize, the Mubadala United States Sail Grand Prix will play host to the championship league’s Grand Finale on San Francisco Bay.

As the final event of Season 2 approaches, stay tuned to see if the defending champions, Australian SailGP Team, will clinch their second consecutive title, or if a new winner will be crowned. Since the races take place on San Francisco Bay, SF on the Bay is rooting for the United States SailGP Team, led by two-time America’s Cup champion Jimmy Spithill.

Who’s competing? Eight nations: Defender Australia and Challengers: Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand and the United States.

Ranking by points with Drivers:

  • Australia 55  – Tom Slingsby
  • United States 53 – Jimmy Spithill
  • Japan 51 – Nathan Outteridge
  • Spain 43 – Phil Robertson
  • New Zealand 42 – Peter Burlington

Saturday March 26, and Sunday March 27, races are scheduled for 14:00 -15:30 (2-3:30pm). The Race Village will be open from 12:00-18:00 (12noon – 6pm).

What is SailGP?

It’s fast-paced racing by young (team mean age is 26) world champion sailors. Some think SailGP is redefining the future of sailing and competitive racing in its second season of fierce competition around the globe. SailGP goal: To leave a positive legacy and build a sustainable sport – by providing equal, life-changing opportunities and new career pathways for all, regardless of race or socioeconomic background.

The newly formed Switzerland SailGP Team will start racing in its cutting-edge F50 in SailGP Season 3, going head-to-head against some of the most illustrious names in the sport. Driver Sébastien Schneiter will be the youngest driver the series has had.

A fun day on the bay! Great for those who want to support the runners, get in a healthy stroll on the Bay Trail, do a little dancing, shopping, or make a day of it with the whole family.

The Annual Bay Front Run starts at 10am Sunday along the beautiful Bay Trail right at the water’s edge. Come out and cheer on the runners at 10am, then have some fun at the festival, immediately following the run.

The Bay Front Festival, from 11am to 4pm. Enjoy live music with the Billy Martini Trio, food trucks, vendors, and kids activities all on beautiful Bay Front Blvd., where fresh air, sun, and water are your backdrop.

Art Paints the City of Richmond with Vibrant Talent!

Arts of Pt Richmond  has certainly kept its promise to enrich the community with art experiences and provide artists support, appreciation, and exposure. There are  powerful ongoing exhibits in three locations in Richmond and outside of buildings you’ll discover Taking it Outdoors, a concept created by Kenoli Oleari and Sharon Good.  50 banners showcase art all over downtown Pt Richmond, supporting the premise that art should be indoors and outdoors, basically everywhere in our lives.  (DJ Leland Sailing on the Bay photograph -right)

El Sol Restaurant is serving up its art exhibit of AOPR member artists that runs through October 13, 2021 with the theme ‘Landscapes’. Participating artists: Dee Bell, Andi Biren, Carol Engelbrecht, Rita Gardner, Caitlin Hibma, Irene Hightower, and Nancy Whitley. The Pt Richmond US Post Office window exhibit has changed! New artworks by fifteen Arts of Point Richmond member artists participated in the newest ART TAG challenge, with the theme of INSIDE/OUT. Artists: Jeanne Hendrickson, Bob Colin, DJ Leland, Bonnie Leonard, Caitlin Hibma, Debi Cooper, George Tomberlin, Carole Englebrecht, Becca Riley, Emily Erickson, David Moore, Louise Williams, Marilyn Hertzberg, Anna Froker, and Cheri Carter. Art Tag is a creative challenge taken up by interested AOPR artists. This exhibit runs through Oct. 4, 2021.
