Commercial Dungeness Crab Season Finally Opens on Sat., Mar. 26

dungeness crabCrab is now on the menu! Domoic acid (produced from algae) levels have dropped significantly and Commercial Dungeness crab season is officially open. However, due to heavy surf and ongoing negotiations for pricing, crabbers didn’t go out until the next week. The season’s opening is over four months delayed due to the high levels of the Domoic acid and at this late date in the season, buyers wanted to test the crabs for quality as they molt this time of year and don’t eat. They tested whether or not their shells are soft and how much meat they have before settling on a price. Price was finally set at $2.90/lb for the fisheries which translates for  retail at about $6/lb.  Warnings are still in place for consumers not to use the cooking water and not to eat the “butter” – the viscera and guts. And you can always still put your own pots out anytime as a recreational crabber.

Recreational Crab Season Finally Opens

On Feb. 11, the CDFW announced the opening of recreational Dungeness crab season south of 38° 00 N Latitude (near Point Reyes in Marin County). A determination had been made that the Dungeness crab caught south of Point Reyes no longer posed a threat to human health. Restrictions still apply. (Read more from the CDFW.)

However, commercial Dungeness crab season is not open yet. Stay tuned as many think it will open any day now.

Emeryville Sportfishing’s total catch since Feb. 11, 2016: 510 Dungeness crab. On Tues. Feb. 16, one boat went out with twelve anglers, bringing home 120 Dungeness crab. Those anglers had great dinners that night and for the night after and then for lunch that next day. “Crab boats go out every day, weather-permitting. I went down to the dock today and the trip was cancelled due to the high winds,” according to Heather Rotz of Emeryville Sportfishing. “People are pretty excited to go out for the Dungeness. And the limit is 10.”

Boats are going out Fri., Feb. 19 and Feb. 26 for Sturgeon. Emeryville Sportfishing is located at 3310 Powell Street in Emeryville. You can reserve a space to go crabbing at (510) 654-6040. The shop’s Winter Hours are Tues.-Sat., 9am-4pm.

Fishing & Crabbing Report

Consumers cautioned to not eat the vicera Photo - cleaneatingmag.com

Consumers cautioned to not eat the viscera Photo – cleaneatingmag.com

Ending the year on a fish-full note, Emeryville Sportfishing sent out 80 anglers in three boats on New Year’s Eve day. The catch: 750 Rockfish and 144 Lingcod.  Dungeness Crab enthusiasts are still awaiting the opening of crab season in the San Francisco Bay area.

Details from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Fish and Game Commission follow. Areas still closed to crab fishing include:
Commercial Dungeness crab fishery statewide;
Recreational Dungeness crab fishery north of 35° 40′ N Latitude (Piedras Blancas Light Station);
Commercial and recreational rock crab fisheries North of 35° 40′ N Latitude (Piedras Blancas Light Station); and
Commercial and recreational rock crab fisheries in state waters around San Miguel, Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands.

They did lift the ban for Dungeness below 35° 40′ N Latitude (Piedras Blancas Light Station), but despite several weeks of samples below alert levels, the CDPH (California Department of Public Health) and OEHHA (Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment ) still recommend that consumers not eat the viscera (internal organs, also known as “butter” or “guts”) of crabs. They are also recommending that water or broth used to cook whole crabs be discarded and not used to prepare dishes such as sauces, broths, soups or stews.  This precaution is being recommended to avoid harm in the unlikely event that some crabs taken from an open fishery have elevated levels of domoic acid. Stay tuned for the Dungeness crab season update.
