The Experience, Alameda: Frank Bette Center for the Arts Plein Air Art Exhibit

The Experience:

Artists Painted Alameda With Vigor!

The Frank Bette Plein Air art exhibit painted a lively picture of Alameda throughout the plaza at South Shore Center last Saturday. Some scenes were serene and others quite vibrant, capturing Victorian houses, produce markets, boats on the water, yacht clubs, scenic gardens, iconic storefronts, and even city hall. En Plein Air means ‘in the open air’ and refers to  painting outdoors with your subject in full view, capturing it in that moment of time.

Artists came to Alameda from all over the U.S. to participate in this annual event. Marie Massey came from Colorado for the week-long paintout. “Painting in Alameda is a homecoming for me,” says Massey. ” I grew up in Alameda and walked to and from my home on Mozart Street through the Gold Coast to Franklin Elementary, Will C. Wood Middle School, and then Encinal High School.  I remember when I was 8, the first time we turned onto Mozart Street and how magical it seemed: a one block, tree lined street with colorful Victorians.  It was so fun to return and paint with the Frank Bette Plein Air Paintout.”    Her painting ‘The Red Umbrella’ is featured here and is the winner of the PAPO Award, which means is will be featured for the 2022 Frank Bette Plein Air Exhibit.

Marie uses a Painting in Layers method, developed by Artist, Barbara Marquardt, that combines the Renaissance artists’ concepts of Chiarscuro with color ideas from the Impressionist painters.  Marie’s work has been described as American Impressionism, distinguished by exciting use of brilliant color, unique composition, and elements of expressionism.

Paintings from the 2021 Frank Bette Plein Air Paintout will be on view August 13 – September 25 in the Main Gallery, with the Opening Reception on Friday, August 13 from 7-9pm.. The Frank Bette Center for the Arts is open Fri – Sun, 11am-5pm.

The Experience, Alameda: Frank Bette Center for the Arts Plein Air Exhibit

The Experience:

Artists Painting Outdoors All Over Alameda!

You may have noticed lots of artists out on the sidewalks, at the beach, or in someone’s garden painting Alameda scenes this week during the Frank Bette Plein Air Paintout. The great news is that you can purchase these and more paintings of both Alameda and San Francisoco this Saturday at South Shore Center in Alameda. Artists will be demonstrating techniques and there will be music during the exhibit. Join them from 10am until 5pm Saturday, August 7.

En Plein Air means ‘in the open air’ and refers to  painting outdoors with your subject in full view.

“Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color and movement into their works. Painting en plein air allows artists to capture the emotional and sensory dimensions of a particular landscape at a particular moment in time. It thus expressed a new spirit of spontaneity and truth to personal impulse within art.” ~The Art Story, https://www.theartstory.org/definition/en-plein-air/

South Shore Center is located at the corner of Otis Drive and Park St in Alameda and is across from the beach on Shoreline. Don’t miss this great Plein Air exhibit and sale. And while at South Shore, stop by Whales & Friends and Modern Mouse for any gift shopping on your list.

The Experience, Alameda: Almanac Beer Co. Brand New Beer

The Experience:

Ready for Sunshine + Opportunity?

Fans are raving about Almanac’s classic Sunshine & Opportunity barrel-aged sour.

With a new citrus twist, this mixed-culture farmhouse ale was aged in oak with hundreds of pounds of California-grown mandarins, Meyer lemons, limonettes, pomelos, and kumquats. Dried hibiscus flowers finished off the brew, creating this blush-colored beauty!

“This new edition of Sunshine & Opportunity,” says Brewmaster Phil Emerson, “adds a combo of hyper fresh Californian sun-kissed juicy citrus and a subtle fruity, tannic structure from hibiscus flowers. Tart like a glass of lemonade and refreshing like a glass of tea. Inspired by pools, porches, and picnics.”

From grain to glass, the folks at Almanac brew a bold and delicious range of fresh and barrel-aged beers. Visit Alameda Point and hang out in their beer garden to sip this new summer ale. The Experience, Alameda: Frank Bette Center for the Arts Photography Exhibit

The Experience:

Egret–Making Contact Runs Through August 6!

Egret – Making Contact, an interactive photography exhibit at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts, portrays the striking personalities of egrets at home in cities around the San Francisco Bay Area. With his lens, Gerry Traucht captures egrets standing gracefully at city entrances, by freeways, lagoons, and parks. He has taken special notice of Egrets in Alameda.

Traucht’s photographs reveal movement that looks like dance, close-up images of individual birds looking into the camera, and wild feathers caught in a frenzied fraction of a second.   This collection of  photographs is an invitation to appreciate the place where art, history, and nature convene and to celebrate the wild elegance, practically in our own backyards.

“What makes this exhibit special,” says Traucht, “is that my photographs were lucky enough to witness egrets in their apparently more mystical and otherworldly states. It is quite astounding to look into the eyes of these natural sentient ambassadors. Alameda folks should have a chance to see and experience the egrets in their transformative behavior.“

28 photographs displayed in the gallery and more in the video shows. An interactive photography exhibit not to miss!

The Frank Bette Center for the Arts is open Fri – Sun, 11am-5pm –  July 23-25, July 30-Aug 1, and Fri, Aug 6, 2021.
