Happenings On the Bay

ALOHA! Pacific Cup Racers are off to Hawaii from San Francisco! Update.

Saturday, July 14 Update on the Pacific Cup race from SF to HI.

Imagine all the preparation for what could be a three week struggle against the elements. Your sails are up and you are heading out the Golden Gate – only to find that on your particular start day, there are no winds. Are we going to be a sitting duck? That is only one of the challenges facing this year’s team of racers taking on the PacCup challenge.

The 60 teams had staggered starting dates Mon. – Fri. July 9-13, and now they have all departed the St. Francis Yacht Club off on their adventures across the Pacific Ocean.

The 20th Pacific Cup’s Friday, July 13 website Race Report says: “With Thursday’s Pasha Hawaii D division getting underway yesterday afternoon, we now have seven of eight fleets at sea and making miles towards Hawaii, with just one more division left to begin their race today: the BMW of San Rafael E division. As we have been anticipating for more than a week now, the Monday starters have continued to reap the benefits of their early start while the later starters in the week are working their way away from the coast in light airs, though at least they aren’t drifting like the Wednesday starters did once they got into the Gulf of the Farallones.”

Saturday, July 14 Website Update: “At about 2:45 pm on Friday July 13th, the BMW of San Rafael E division set sail from San Francisco Bay, bound for Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. With the firing of the starting gun and a clean start by all six E fleet boats, the final start of the 2018 Pacific Cup has commenced and all boats are now on course and racing to Hawaii. In reinforcing the popular superstition, Friday the 13th is not likely to bring good luck to the six yachts – between 41 and 70 feet – which set sail today. Like the Wednesday and Thursday starters, E division boats are expected to begin sailing in light air, despite the six boats starting in the strongest breeze of all four starting days.” Saturday, July 14 Update.

Teams check in daily and you can track the race through team reports, video and commentary at PacificCup.org or use TRACKER.

Much more to come soon.

Behind the Scenes

Richmond Yacht Club hosted the pre-race Pacific Cup Village. Boats from out of town were allowed to dock at RYC, undergo last minute inspections, prep & provision their boats. Besides fun dinner events, lots of on-water practice, the Pacific Cup Yacht Club hosted a series of seminars for captains and crews and many Bon Voyage parties. Richmond Trail Guides, produced by SF on the Bay, were available for visitors to explore where to eat, drink, stay and play in Richmond while here for the week leading up to the the race start.

Richmond Yacht Club member and Richmond resident, Kim Paternoster, chaired the marketing communications effort. She also produced the classy and beautiful official race guide with Pt. Richmond renowned marine artist Jim DeWitt’s cover ‘Paradise Bound’ artwork. Most racing sailors on San Francisco Bay know DeWitt’s signature artwork very well. Kim shared yesterday’s start video, produced by Pacific Cup Yacht Club Media Manager Ronald A Simpson.

Kaneohe Yacht Club will welcome the sailing teams with after parties starting on Monday, July 23 until Friday, July 27, when the Awards will be announced.  Good luck everyone!

Stay tuned as we will be updating this story.

Happy World Oceans Day!

“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came.”    -John F. Kennedy

Today the California State Division of Boating & Waterways/CA Coastal Commission wishes the Bay Area a Happy World Oceans Day! They are asking us to celebrate our oceans and waterways by making a bigger commitment to protect our environment. Here are some reminders you can share with your friends:

Love your San Francisco Bay, local lakes, rivers and the Pacific Ocean.

▪ Refuse polystyrene foam (Styrofoam) items.
▪ Refuse plastic straws and stirrers; use compostable or pasta stirrers.
▪ Invest in reusable coffee mugs and water bottles instead of disposable cups.
▪ Refuse the use of disposable plastic. Implement a No-Plastic house rule at home, at your office, at events and parties.
▪ Keep cigarette butts off streets and beaches.
▪ Become a leader. Encourage your friends to adopt “green” habits.
▪ Take Part in CA Coastal Cleanup Day or Adopt-A-Beach event. More information.
▪ Use less stuff and make careful consumer choices.
▪ Avoid personal care products containing microbeads.* Look for plastic listed in the ingredients: polypropylene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate or polymethyl methacrylate.
▪ Anglers: Properly dispose of fishing lines, nets and hooks. Recycle your fishing line. Participate in an effort to make portable fishing line containers from reused materials and distribute them to the fishing community.

Ginger, Ginger’s World, found peace at the ocean

*According to Stuff, microbeads are tiny pieces of plastic used in personal care products. They are designed to go down the drain and into our bays, lakes, rivers and oceans. Some claim by the billions every day. They absorb toxins in the water, are eaten by marine life, and can make their way up the food chain all the way to our dinner plates. SF on the Bay partners with organizations that are trying to protect our waterways. More information here.

Thousands Attend the 2018 Pacific Sail & Power Boat Show’s Celebration of Marine Sports

Thousands of boating enthusiasts and community members attended the 2018 Pacific Sail & Power Boat Show over four days, April 19 -22, celebrating sailing, boating, and the marine sport lifestyle at the Richmond waterfront’s Craneway Pavilion and Marina Bay Yacht Harbor.

“We welcomed a truly dedicated maritime crowd, including our passionate exhibitors and in-water boat display participants,“ commented Katie Kelly, Sail America Association Manager. “We are fortunate to have so many people involved who make the show a success. We are already looking forward to next year, when the new ferry service to the Craneway Pavilion, currently in process, will make it easy and fun for people to visit the show.”

In its third year in Richmond, this year’s show filled the 45,000 sf exhibit space, created an in-water boat showcase and featured additional global participants. Show management also reported that attendance had increased over the previous year. The 2018 Best of Show winner is Jeanneau America. The Best in Show Water Display award went to Silver Seas Yachts. The Best in Show Booth Display – 200 sf and Under was awarded to 727 Sailbags and the Best in Show Booth Display – Over 200 sf was given to Helly Hansen.

Boat show visitors crowded around the new sail and power boats and shopped for exciting and new marine products and gear. “ We had lots of quality inquiries about our products,” said exhibitor Sean Svendsen of Svendsen’s Marine & Industrial Supply. Shoppers took advantage of expert advice and great boat show discounts.

“We’re so happy with the turnout and enthusiasm,” commented Matt Lewis, Visit Richmond CA. “Richmond has so much to offer this audience – from the dog friendly atmosphere to our hospitality establishments  and wonderful restaurants.  We were pleased to direct many of the attendees to our neighborhood gems with the Richmond Trail Guides on such a gorgeous weekend.”

Over 2,000 visitors participated in the ongoing seminars learning about weather forecasting, surface pressure charts, marine diesel engine troubleshooting, offshore cruising, medical emergencies, and more. Hands-on boating clinics featuring both sail and power boats were popular and radio-controlled model yacht racing was a favorite activity for young and old alike.

L-R Richard Jepson, US Sailing, Roger van Hertsen, Evrand van Hertsen and swimmer Christian Einfeldt

Environment and safety were a focus of the outdoor activities. A big highlight of the show, the U.S. Coast Guard showcased their water rescue helicopter both Saturday and Sunday and Groundwork Richmond hailed Earth Day with training and guided kayak tours. US Sailing presented the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal to Roger van Hertsen and his father Evrand van Hertsen for their rescue of swimmer Christian Einfeldt, who was severely injured by an attacking sea lion in San Francisco Bay in December of 2017.

Camaraderie among the boating community was at an all time high. Latitude 38’s TGIF Party was filled to capacity on Friday night and Cruising Outpost’s Cruisers Party was a big hit, raising money for the Educational Tall Ships Project in Sausalito, CA.

As the boats slowly moved out of Richmond’s Marina Bay Yacht Harbor, exhibitors packed up their booths and drove away from Craneway Pavilion. It was kind of like the circus coming into a small town and transforming it into a fun and exciting show over four days. And then it leaves and afterwards the town goes back to regular life, with only the hope that it will return again next year. And it will.

The 2018 Pacific Sail & Power Boat Show® Embraces the Environment, Marine Sports and Water Rescue Efforts

San Franciscans and visitors love watching the sea lions down at the shore along Pier 39 or on their live sea lion cam.  They have a big chest and belly and seem pretty funny walking on all fours with their long flippers. These mammals seem to enjoy laying around lapping up the sunshine and barking boisterously. We rarely hear of them biting a human. Dr. Claire Simeone, Conservation Medicine Veterinarian for the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito suggests that the sea lion may have been injured or sick according to KGO’s coverage of an incident in December of 2017, where two sailors rescued the victim.

Roger van Hertsen

At The Pacific Sail & Power Boat Show this year US Sailing Board of Directors Member Richard Jepsen is presenting the US Sailing’s Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal to Roger van Hertsen and his father Evrand van Hertsen for their rescue of a swimmer severely injured by an attacking sea lion in San Francisco Bay December 14, 2017. The timing was everything. “It was a 60 second window,” says Van Hertsen.”We had just finished lunch and were going for a casual sail around Angel Island when I saw two heads bobbing in the water and slowed down.” The victim, 56 yr.-old Christian Einfeldt, out on his regular swim, cried out that he had been bitten by a sea lion. “I didn’t know how bad it was when I first called the Coast Guard and then saw all the blood and called them back, which escalated their response time.” Van Hertsen said anyone in his situation would have done what he did and was happy it turned out the way it did.

The awards ceremony is Saturday, April 21, 5:30 pm, in the tent outside Craneway Pavilion. The awards presentation kicks off Cruising Outpost’s Cruisers Party and raffle at 6 pm to benefit the Educational Tall Ships Foundation Project in Sausalito.
