Artemis Racing’s skipper Nathan Outteridge and crew were exuberant as they finally took 1st place in Race 3 Sunday in their hometown Gothenburg, Sweden, to the cheers of all their fans. ETNZ took 2nd and Land Rover BAR 3rd. Oracle was in 4th. Double points’ racing weighs heavily in Sunday’s races. At the end of Race 3 ETNZ, BAR and USA are tied overall for the America’s Cup Louis Vuitton World Series Event 2 with 34 points each.

Lighter winds prevailed and there was no foiling, as boats can’t generate enough speed to make the foils work. Getting to the first mark is all about what angle will get you there faster. Tacticians have to determine to go with the wind or against the wind and take advantage of every shift. Code 0 (larger sail for downwind) sails play a vital role on days like this, as does positioning on the boat – shifting weight as the environment changes. Anticipating winds by studying dark spots (puffs in the water) is key.

Race 4 had a little more wind and the start ended up pretty even except for Artemis in last. Commentators said that in conditions like today’s, “You are a hero one minute and a goat the next.“  Oracle was out in front and then in leg 3 the wind shifted and their lead just evaporated in a quick minute. Japan took the lead. Meanwhile, New Zealand was making huge gains. And in one more wind shift, ETNZ was in the lead sailing very well, positioning weight on the boat as they adjusted to the weird winds. Tactician’s judgment was key.

Oracle Team USA takes 4th (really stings after winning two first places in Sat.’s races) with BAR in 5th and Artemis last. “That was brutal,” said Jimmy Spithill, as Oracle crossed the line (on-board audio).

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series runs over two years – 2015 and 2016. The winner of the series will carry two points forward into the round robin phase. Second place in the series carries one point. At the end of the round robin, any ties will be broken using these results. That means the AC World Series could determine which team receives the bonus point for the America’s Cup Match and which team is eliminated.

Next Event: Aug. 27-30 in Gothenburg, Sweden

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

After discussions with the America’s Cup organising committee due to extreme weather we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel today’s racing and Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event programme, and the site has been closed for the day, Sunday July 26.

We had hoped to go ahead with early racing, but with winds gusting in excess of 30mph we could not risk the safety of the crews and public, and their welfare is paramount.

Due to high winds the Waterfront Festival Arena and Fanzone Arena is now closed, and we ask public to leave the event site.

For everyone who booked tickets in the Fanzone Arena and Grandstand today, refunds will be issued through Ticketmaster.

An exuberant British team takes the lead with 19 points day one. Landover BAR wins the first race and Emirates Team New Zealand wins the second race in the 35th America’s Cup Louis Vuitton World Series regatta in Portsmouth, GBR. Kiwis are in second place with 18 points and Oracle Team USA in 3rd with 15 points.

We were spoiled by the superb television coverage of the 34th America’s Cup match held on San Francisco Bay in 2013. Since the AC Louis Vuitton World Series races are being held in other parts of the world, we cannot easily find live viewing due to broadcasting exclusive rights. Highlights of the event in Portsmouth should be reported on NBC Sports Network in the US. Then there’s always Pay Per View! If you purchase the AC+ app from the America’s Cup website, you can watch the races live on your computer, tablet or phone.

Here’s a glimpse of the end of race 1 on July 25.

Summer of 2015

Summer, Emeryville on the Bay's new mascot

Summer, Emeryville on the Bay’s new mascot

Kicking off the Summer of 2015, Emeryville on the Bay presents our new mascot, Summer. She was rescued from a kill-shelter by HopAlong Animal Rescue and fostered by Every Dog Has Its Day Care, which recently moved from Emeryville to neighboring West Oakland. We met and adopted Summer at Bay St. Emeryville’s first Wed. night Walk N’ Wag. Bay Street is hosting this fun dog event every Wed. in July from 5:30-7:30pm. Enjoy live music, educational demonstrations, Meet & Greet for adoptable dogs, Doggie Products, Doggie treats at select shops and more.

Enjoy your Summer! We are already enjoying ours. She is currently rooting for the team from Down Under.

Pixar Animates Cities on San Francisco Bay

Pixar & The Incredibles Partner with Emeryville Unified School District -Debby Coleman, Pixar Animation Studios

Pixar & The Incredibles Partner with Emery Unified School District in 2006 in Emeryville -Debby Coleman, Pixar Animation Studios

You can’t help but thank Pixar for its gift to kids and our entertainment world, as well as waking up our lives. This summer you can revisit their animated films and then tour locations around the San Francisco Bay visiting landmarks that for specific reasons are included in Pixar’s productions. Seeing an icon from your hometown really personalizes the company and the film for those of us who live in shoreline cities.

Here are a few locations:

  • Emeryville and Pixar University – in Cars, Toy Story 3 and The Incredibles with many Emeryville streets in the opening scene;
  • Fenton’s Creamery on Piedmont Ave in Oakland – in Up;
  • Grand Lake Theater in Oakland – in Up;
  •  Hidden City Cafe in Point Richmond – in Monsters, Inc. and in trailers for WALL-E! and Toy Story 2; and
  • West Cutting Blvd in Richmond – in both Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3

Find out why these locations are included in the productions!
