The Experience, Emeryville: Celebration of the Arts Opening Night @ Public Market

The Experience:

Be Seen at the Art Scene + Meet the Artists!

You are invited to Opening Night of Emeryville’s Annual Art Exhibition Friday, October 6, 6-9pm at the southern part of Public Market Emeryville, 5905 Shellmound St. This juried exhibition produced by Celebration of the Arts, features nearly 200 artworks created by 126 Emeryville artists. On opening night you get to meet the artists and get a first look at their artwork as you listen to music by The doRiaN Mode: Vintage Jazz & Blues. A no-host bar raises funds for the Emeryville Youth Art Program. It’s always an electrifying opening night as the community celebrates the city’s thriving collective creativity..

We had the opportunity to talk with James Stahlman about his piece in his first appearance at the 37th Emeryville Art Exhibition.

Meet James Stahlman and ‘Incantation: House Smells’ It’s a mixed media monotype with lithography elements, refactored to create a single image. 30˝x22˝ According to James, a desire to provide the viewer of his work the ability to create a pleasurable experience inspired ’Incantation: House Smells’

“In this piece, the incantation is to remind the viewer,” says James, “to allow the scent of a room to affect their way of existing in that liminal space between nose blindness and nose bliss. To scent their homes to attract the energy they want to have personally and/or to share with others.”

He says that by reflecting on the work, there is a trigger to seek out something rare, missing or special in your life. It becomes an incantation to find joy.

Scents bring back fond memories of being at the shore or in your mother’s flower garden, easily done with scented candles. “As an interior designer and artist, attention to the details of a space is something I want everyone to have,” continues James. “Remember rooms of the past, and generally feel okay taking little trips to buy great scented candles.”

All in all – ‘Incantation: House Smells’ is a prayer mat, a quiet word with one’s self.

James has lived in Emeryville for seven years and this is his first time in the Emeryville Art Exhibition. When asked what it is about Emeryville, he said that “Emeryville has a shared appreciation, if not love, a synergy for living and working here. Emeryville was a pioneer in the live-work space.”

Emeryville’s 2023 Art Exhibition

The exhibition is open October 7 – 29, Wednesdays through Sundays, from 11am to 6pm.

Selected as one of Califorina’s fourteen state-designated Cultural Districts, Emeryville represents an innovative enclave devoted to art and creative production. The sheer number and array of Emeryville artists illustrates the city’s cultural vibrancy and provides an impressive creative pool that continues to produce new and exciting works.

“In this year’s enormous show, there are over 40 artists new to the exhibition,” comments Sharon Wilchar, exhibition coordinator, “which translates to an infusion of new artwork in addition to the work of artists who have made Emeryville their home for decades. We look forward to getting to know these new names and talents as our arts’ community extends a welcome.”

You’ll see all media – paintings, sculpture, photographs, prints, ceramics, textiles, and glass works. This year’s exhibition includes contributions of poetry and dance, featuring a site-specific dance performance by Nancy Karp + Dancers, and an ekphrastic poetry workshop and readings with former Emeryville Poet Laureate Sarah Kobrinsky. And admission to the reception and exhibition is free!

The Space

Each year the exhibition space is donated by a local Emeryville business. For the second year in a row, Public Market Emeryville, owned by Oxford Properties in partnership with City Center Realty Partners, has generously offered space for the Annual Exhibition, located at the south end of this lively artisan food eateries destination.

The Experience, Emeryville: The Compound Gallery Event

The Experience:

Make ART in the PARK!

Attention printmaking pals and park enthusiasts! Join The Compound Gallery for a fun event in the Doyle Hollis Park at 1327 62nd St in Emeryville on Sunday, September 17, from 1-4pm.

The Compound Gallery is hosting a free Printing in the Park extravaganza. Picture this: a sunny park, the smell of ink in the air, and you, trying your hand at letterpress printmaking.

Together you will be printing posters that celebrate our local parks, community and art! Ink, paper and a dash of creative chaos, all under the sun-soaked skies. Artist David Fullarton will be there printing free prints for visitors!

Why Letterpress Printing?

According to The Compound Gallery owners, Matt and Lena Reynoso, it goes back in time.  “Printing the word has been humanity’s most powerful tool for mass information exchange. At one time, all printed material was printed using letterpress technology and although commercially abandoned for modern printing techniques, we find traditional hand set letterpress type is still a viable way of printing one’s message in multiples to share with the world.” Many believe Letterpress Printing communicates an elegance and handcrafted quality that is classy and truly unique today.

The Reynosos’ goal is to introduce people to this historical process at their ‘Printing in the Park’ event and bring the community together for a fun-filled and creative afternoon of togetherness. “We love the Doyle Hollis Park,” they continue, “and aim to activate it with free community events like this. Through demonstration and participation we aim to connect the participant in a real hands-on printmaking setting. We love introducing art and art-making to those who may not have an outlet for their artistic expression. Art appreciation is something everyone can benefit from.”

Free posters! Free raffle to win art! All of this in a beautiful park with live music, good people and a food truck! More details to come. Stay tuned!

Their gallery across the street from the park will be stocked with fantastic prints just waiting for you to snatch them up. So, bring your pals, bring your imagination and turn that park into a printmaking paradise! It’s a day of fun, laughs, ink-stained fingers, and who knows – maybe you’ll even pick up a new favorite hobby.

This event is part of the Rotten City Cultural District, as designated by the California Arts Council in partnership with Visit California and Caltrans.

The Compound Gallery has a gallery, print shop, art facilities and an online art shop. Their hours: Wednesdays – Sundays, 12-6pm.
