Welcome to Emeryville’s 2014 Season of Sailing & Yachting

Heading towards the opening of the 2014 sailing and yachting season, I reflected on 2013’s events. We had one of our best summers ever with the America’s Cup taking place in the center of the San Francisco Bay.

This has to be one of the top regattas in the history of the America’s Cup. Congratulations to Oracle Team USA!  The technological advance in design and speed, the level of skill for the sailors and the even match racing set the bar very high for future Cup racing. Watching 72-foot catamarans with masts 13 stories high hydro-foil within a few feet of each other at speeds 25-45 miles per hour was exhilarating. The shoreline access and the television, phone and online advances in viewing technology were significant. This was one of the most exciting events in my career.

The America’s Cup was a tremendous boost to the boating industry in general and to the economy and the tourism business in the Bay Area. California boaters and harbors should be honored to host the oldest trophy in sports for the United States. The Bay Area backdrop with its scenic views, currents and wind variety made for a summer of racing beyond compare.

Our heart goes out to Emirates Team New Zealand. Their sportsmanship is first class and their support and fan base was significant.  New Zealand gave it their all and we expected to see the cup head south for many days while Team New Zealand was in the lead with only one race to win to take it all. It was a pleasure to host many of their fans in our Emeryville marinas. Oracle Team USA’s comeback is truly remarkable.

As the Bay Area settled back into a routine and the super yachts and cruisers headed out to their various destinations, it was announced on September 30th that Hamilton Island Yacht Club (HIYC), located on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia, has challenged for the 35th America’s Cup. The location, which will be announced by the beginning of summer, remains to be determined and we can only hope that it will remain here in the San Francisco Bay.

We have several exciting boating events approaching:

The Strictly Sail Pacific Boat Show is the largest sailboat show on the West Coast April 10-13 at Jack London Square in Oakland. Emery Cove Yacht Harbor and Emeryville Marina both exhibit at this show. Show times located here.

‘Opening Day on the Bay’ Sunday April 27th 2014 is the biggest boating day of the year. This event is hosted by the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA) representing over 100 Northern California yacht clubs celebrating the official beginning of the 2014 boating season on the San Francisco Bay. Emeryville Yacht Club will participate in the Blessing of the Fleet and Parade of Yachts. This year’s decorating theme is “Visions” and the boats can be viewed by the public along the San Francisco waterfront from Crissy Field to Pier 39, 12 noon until 3pm.

Emery Cove is hosting the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary free ‘Vessel Safety Checks’ and boating safety information event Saturday April 5th, 2014 and May 31, 2014. The 2014 decals will be issued to vessels passing the inspection.

And finally Earth Day April 22, 2014. Emery Cove has been certified as a Clean Marina (www.cleanmarina.org) since November 2006 and strives to be a steward of the environment.

Emery Cove is now at record occupancy. We enjoy visitors both from afar and locally, including hosting cruise-ins for the Emeryville Yacht Club. We had visitors from 15 Northern California Yacht Clubs last year wanting to be part of the action in the center of San Francisco Bay. A number of boaters enjoyed what Emeryville has to offer and decided to stay and make Emeryville their main port. The local transportation, restaurants, shopping, bay trails and sights have all the makings for a great destination.

We wish you all the best for 2014.

As you enter the 7500 sq. ft. space at 5699 Bay Street the evening of Fri., Oct. 4, you will be immersed in the color, texture and high energy of the 27th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition. The opening reception from 6 to 9 pm features a meet ‘n greet with the artists, food donations by Emeryville signature businesses, live music and a no-host bar. Fountains of creativity will be spilling over the Bay Street space, which is a natural gathering place for the community to celebrate its vibrant art culture. The 27th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition is a “uniquely Emeryville community event,” featuring works of eighty established and emerging artists who live or work in Emeryville and produced by Emeryville residents and businesses.

A jury of art professionals selected the collection of artwork for the 27th Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition through artist studio visits. According to Kathleen Hanna, curator and juror, “My third consecutive year of studio visits was amazing. New artists, great new work from artists I had met the previous years and an overall feeling of community involvement and anticipation of this wonderful event that brings together the entire town to celebrate art.” The other jurors are René de Guzman, Senior Curator of Art, Oakland Museum of California, and Sandy Simon, potter, owner of TRAX Gallery, Berkeley.

Sharon WIlchar has produced the Art Exhibition for 25 years with a team of dedicated volunteers. “Volunteers and artists make the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition happen. I am grateful. Our volunteers have been so generous year after year.  Ellen Hope Rosenberg, proprietress of the Townhouse Bar & Grill, hosts the volunteer Kick-Off party each year and our Board of Directors host the Volunteer Thank You Party when the exhibition closes.  Albert Repola, Ruby*s Cafe and Jean Goldman, SunPower Corp., are our over-the-top reception coordinators. And you can catch up with Mayor Kurt Brinkman, as he will be heading up the no-host bar to raise funds for the Emeryville Youth Art Program, which has been bringing artists into the Emery Unified School District now for three decades.”

Mayor Brinkman adds,”The  Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition is about creating a sense of community for the residents of this amazing city.  For twenty years as the event bartender, I have seen how art stimulates and develops community through an environment of creativity, conversation and appreciation for the talent of the Emeryville artists. So, please join us at the annual Celebration of the Arts event at Bay Street and become part of the Emeryville community.”

Madison Marquette generously donated this year’s exciting Bay Street location.  Additional sponsors include the City of Emeryville through a substantial grant, the non-profit Emeryville Celebration of the Arts, City Center Realty Partners, LLC, Wareham Development, Pixar, Kava Massih Architects, Thomson|Dorfman Partners, LLC, AAA Northern CA, NV & UT and Ruby*s Cafe.

The Exhibition is on display Oct. 5 through Oct. 27, 2013, and the show is open daily from 11am to 6pm. Admission is free and works on exhibit are for sale. Public Transportation: MacArthur BART station, Emery-Go-Round Shellmound-Powell Route; AC Transit bus #26, and Transbay commuter route Z from San Francisco. For directions, log on to: www.emeryarts.org or call 510/652-6122.

Emeryville salutes the 34th America’s Cup Challenge

It was nearly dawn when Mr. Spear’s truck and cherry picker arrived at the Emeryville Marina laden with brilliantly Spear7521(1)colored banners to celebrate all the ways to play in Emeryville in honor of the 34th America’s Cup Challenge.

Team Emeryville, a committee comprised of residents, business people and City staff, met monthly for over two years to create a strong presence for Emeryville during the America’s Cup Summer of Racing.

A two-page ad supported by the marinas, local businesses and the City showcased Emeryville for twelve months to the sailing community in Latitude 38, the most popular sailing magazine in northern California and read worldwide online. A website, emeryvilleonthebay.com created a tourism bureau for Emeryville.

And today, the banners began to paint the town! Stay tuned as Emeryville dresses up with 180 vibrant SAIL! BIKE! DOCK! WALK! and SURF! banners.

Welcome from our Mayor

Welcome to summer in Emeryville on the Bay, where we invite you to dock, stay, dine and play.  We are only ten minutes from San Francisco, host city of the 34th America’s Cup challenge. Emeryville is home to 2 marinas, 850 slips, 4 major hotels, over 30 restaurants and cafes and lots of shopping – worldwide and boutique brands. Plus, there are unlimited ways to play here this summer – from windsurfing, sailing and kayaking to hiking the Bay Trail.

It’s been a great summer so far. Our marinas have had lots of visitors, including some exotic yachts. Water sports abound on the San Francisco Bay off the shore of Emeryville. KGB Kiteboarding in Emeryville Marina reports that some of our Emeryville

employees enjoy paddle boarding during their lunch hour or after work. We also seem to have lots of music in town at Bay Street, Public Market and at our parks. Check our music and event calendar.

I want to thank City staff for launching our Summer Concert series on the 4th of July with great dance music by Jukebox Heroes at the Doyle-Hollis Park. The 2013 performance series runs through July 25 and features local Emeryville food trucks serving up food and drinks. Music is from 6-8pm. Thurs., July 18  Molasses will perform at Park Avenue Plaza and on Thurs., July 25 Grove Valve Orchestra will play at Doyle-Hollis Park. Please join us!

July 4th was also the launch of the Summer of Racing with the opening of the America’s Cup Park to the public on Piers 27/29 in San Francisco along the Embarcadero and the Opening Ceremony for the start of the America’s Cup Challenge. The great thing is that daily admission to the America’s Cup Park is free for a range of family activities including interactive exhibits and the ‘Flying on Water’ cinema where visitors experience the sensation of racing on one of the AC72 catamarans. Hands-on sailing activities for kids are also available.

Back here in Emeryville, be sure to take our ArtWalk around town during the good weather. You can download the map from our website.  Great news for Emeryville! Based at Emery Cove Yacht Harbor, Seaward Coastal Ventures, has five boats available for charter for viewing the Louis Vuitton Cup and the 34th America’s Cup races.

Enjoy the races and the rest of your summer. See you around Emeryville on the Bay.

Kurt Brinkman, Mayor of Emeryville

Summer Sailstice was founded in February 2001, by John Arndt, Associate Publisher at Latitude 38, as the global, annual celebration of sailing held on the summer solstice.

San Francisco Bay’s SUMMER SAILSTICE Celebration will be held at Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda starting at 10:30 am. and heading into the evening with food and music. There are all kinds of competitions and prizes, including the The Laser Sir Francis Chichester Race around Alameda, which is being revived by Nick Burke, Northern California Laser fleet captain and Encinal Yacht Club. The 17 mile long course allows competitors to go either way round the island which includes ducking, swimming, somehow passing under a number of ‘too low’ bridges. Laser sailors can contact Nick Burke.

Other Sailstice activities include a boat-building contest, new sailboats on display, sailboat rides, sunset photo contest, a small boat regatta, the Summer Sailstice Party Circuit Race and food and music. A fabulous, waterfront musical line-up plays from noon until 8 so you can rock and roll on your sail over and when you get ashore. You can also sail the 2013 Estuary Stroll. An Aerial group photo will be taken at 2 pm. All marinas are encouraged to empty the docks and get sailors out on the water!  GO SAILING!

Encinal Yacht Club is located at1251 Pacific Marina in Alameda.
