Will We Watch Two Cats Compete on the Bay Today at 1:15pm?

Race 1 of the Louis Vuitton Cup Semi Final scheduled at 1:15pm today

Threats of wind velocity exceeding the allowed limits were cause for two news briefings this morning. After the second news briefing at 10:45am, Regatta Director, Iain Murray said (americascup.com), “Today is a going to be on the edge. It’s going to be a timed run between the wind getting stronger and us getting the race done in time. We’ve got a wind limit of 21.2 knots with the last part of the flood tide. And as usual, we’re expecting the breeze to increase during the day.”

Artemis Racing has self-imposed internal wind limits for the crew’s safety, so we will have to wait ‘on the edge.’ If there are more gentle winds, we will see:

Artemis Racing vs. Luna Rossa Challenge

Our friends at MojoSail.com shared this link with us to watch the race live:

The first to win seven (7) races moves on to face Emirates Team New Zealand in the Louis Vuitton Cup Finals. All races are scheduled to start at 1:15pm

Race 2  – Wed., Aug. 7 – Race 3  – Fri., Aug. 9 – Race 4  – Sat., Aug. 10

With less than ten days of practice compared to almost 80 days for Luna Rossa, Artemis Racing is the underdog, but continues to surprise us with their courage, perseverance and capabilities. Catch their excitement and watch their foiling in Loick-Cam’s video

Emeryville salutes the 34th America’s Cup Challenge

It was nearly dawn when Mr. Spear’s truck and cherry picker arrived at the Emeryville Marina laden with brilliantly Spear7521(1)colored banners to celebrate all the ways to play in Emeryville in honor of the 34th America’s Cup Challenge.

Team Emeryville, a committee comprised of residents, business people and City staff, met monthly for over two years to create a strong presence for Emeryville during the America’s Cup Summer of Racing.

A two-page ad supported by the marinas, local businesses and the City showcased Emeryville for twelve months to the sailing community in Latitude 38, the most popular sailing magazine in northern California and read worldwide online. A website, emeryvilleonthebay.com created a tourism bureau for Emeryville.

And today, the banners began to paint the town! Stay tuned as Emeryville dresses up with 180 vibrant SAIL! BIKE! DOCK! WALK! and SURF! banners.

Welcome from our Mayor

Welcome to summer in Emeryville on the Bay, where we invite you to dock, stay, dine and play.  We are only ten minutes from San Francisco, host city of the 34th America’s Cup challenge. Emeryville is home to 2 marinas, 850 slips, 4 major hotels, over 30 restaurants and cafes and lots of shopping – worldwide and boutique brands. Plus, there are unlimited ways to play here this summer – from windsurfing, sailing and kayaking to hiking the Bay Trail.

It’s been a great summer so far. Our marinas have had lots of visitors, including some exotic yachts. Water sports abound on the San Francisco Bay off the shore of Emeryville. KGB Kiteboarding in Emeryville Marina reports that some of our Emeryville

employees enjoy paddle boarding during their lunch hour or after work. We also seem to have lots of music in town at Bay Street, Public Market and at our parks. Check our music and event calendar.

I want to thank City staff for launching our Summer Concert series on the 4th of July with great dance music by Jukebox Heroes at the Doyle-Hollis Park. The 2013 performance series runs through July 25 and features local Emeryville food trucks serving up food and drinks. Music is from 6-8pm. Thurs., July 18  Molasses will perform at Park Avenue Plaza and on Thurs., July 25 Grove Valve Orchestra will play at Doyle-Hollis Park. Please join us!

July 4th was also the launch of the Summer of Racing with the opening of the America’s Cup Park to the public on Piers 27/29 in San Francisco along the Embarcadero and the Opening Ceremony for the start of the America’s Cup Challenge. The great thing is that daily admission to the America’s Cup Park is free for a range of family activities including interactive exhibits and the ‘Flying on Water’ cinema where visitors experience the sensation of racing on one of the AC72 catamarans. Hands-on sailing activities for kids are also available.

Back here in Emeryville, be sure to take our ArtWalk around town during the good weather. You can download the map from our website.  Great news for Emeryville! Based at Emery Cove Yacht Harbor, Seaward Coastal Ventures, has five boats available for charter for viewing the Louis Vuitton Cup and the 34th America’s Cup races.

Enjoy the races and the rest of your summer. See you around Emeryville on the Bay.

Kurt Brinkman, Mayor of Emeryville
