This is the only time of year when we can consider having an outdoor show on a Friday evening, and that is exactly what is happening with our presentation of the Oakland Jazz Choir on June 24, starting at 7pm and going until dusk. The OJC has been an East Bay institution for 29 years, but this is their first appearance at The Back Room, and we are excited to have them here.

OJC faced and overcame many personal pandemic challenges, even producing 2 virtual choir videos, and we’re thrilled to say they’re back, stronger & better than ever in 2022!

The OJC is a non-profit and has been an East Bay institution for over 29 years. During this span the group has taken many shapes, sizes and forms but the common denominator has always been the same: Joy of expression, using the voice to communicate the triumphs, as well as the turbulence, of the human spirit. They are committed to bringing vocal jazz performance and education to underserved audiences in the Bay Area and beyond. Choir membership includes 14-17 singers, as diverse in age, religion, and race as their hometown. Artistic director Ben Flint, a native of Memphis TN, is steeped in gospel, jazz and R&B, but applies his diverse musical experience to finding a uniquely Oakland sound.

This multicultural, multi-talented group of people volunteer their time, energy and skill to produce some of the sweetest harmonies around. Accompanied by the superlative talents of pianist/arranger, Walter Bankovitch, OJC delivers exquisite 5 and 6 part harmonies, performing original and contemporary arrangements that include pieces by hit makers such as Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, and Pat Metheny, as well as Michael Jackson, Thelonius Monk, Tower of Power & Tears for Fears, and sings and interprets arrangements of jazz and pop tunes from the 40s to the 90s, including composers from Dizzy Gillespie to Sting, Sly Stone and Jobim.

Tickets are $15. Children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).

The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own food and adult beverages with no additional corkage fee. The venue is ADA accessible. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-381-1997.
