Day One No Wind – Races Canceled. Day Two of Semi-Finals Marred by Broken Wing

Leading up to the first day of racing in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs Semi-Finals:

in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifier races, ORACLE TEAM USA placed first and takes one point with them to the America’s Cup match. Emirates Team New Zealand came in second. The French team has been eliminated and the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs

Semi-Finals start on June 4.

Because they were second in the Qualifiers, ETNZ was allowed to choose their race mate. They chose Land Rover BAR, who had come in third. This leaves SoftBank Team Japan to face off Artemis Racing in the Semi-Finals

Both of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs Semi-Finals will be decided by a first to five points race format, with the winners of each Semi-Final then facing each other in the Finals of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs. The winner goes on to challenge the Defender ORACLE TEAM USA.

Sunday:

On Sun., June 4, Semi-Final Racing was delayed due to light winds of only 2-3 knots. The winds did pick up towards the 6knot minimum, but not consistently. Racing was abandoned after two hours of waiting around.

Monday:

It started out as a day of highly competitive and exhilarating racing but provided  heartbreak for Ben Ainslie and his team.

Mon., June 5, the winds are perfect at 14 – 15 knots across the Great Sound. New Zealand and Great Britain off to a strong start and GB cannot make any mistakes. And they did more than make a mistake. The camber arm broke in their sail and they had to stop and forfeit Race 1 to ETNZ.

In the second race Artemis Racing and SoftBank Team Japan had similar starts, but Japan took off. Maneuver smoothness was very important and JPN took the point in their first Semi-Final race.

Land Rover BAR tried to get back to shore and change out their sail before Race 2, but could not, and had to forfeit again to ETNZ.

Race 4 Japan had a great solid start and then Sweden and Japan both were just ripping it across the water at 30 plus knots. Japan at one point was 200 meters ahead, but by the 4th leg after some solid maneuvers and excellent tacking, Artemis  ended up 300 m ahead of SoftBank and grabbed the win.

The day ends with NZ taking 2 wins and JPN and SW 1 win each. The first teams to reach 5 wins will then be in the Challenger Playoffs Finals.

Land Rover BAR plans to be back out on the Great Sound racing on Tuesday. “We have forfeited racing today due to damage to our wing, we will be back tomorrow (Tuesday) to fight another day,” the British team said on Twitter. According to America’s Cup rules, they are allowed to use a spare sail.

America’s Cup Match Racing Off to an Exciting Start with Surprise WIns, Collisions and Penalties at the Start

Today – The 2017 Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers are now on Race Day 7 in Bermuda. Elimination of qualifying teams begins.

Fri., May 26 – the start of the LVACQ  was delayed due to fierce winds.

Sat., May 27 – The winds were cooperating and this is how Race Day 1 started out – each team just waiting for the other to make a mistake. The day was full of surprises and collisions.

  1. Off to a good start in Race 1 USA wins over France by 2 min 11 sec. To be expected with France being a newer team and much the underdog with no wins in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, advancing to the Qualifiers with 0 points.
  2. Next race Sweden wins over Japan with an exciting race. SoftBank was in the lead from the start, then 17 sec. ahead coming around gate 4 when Artemis came around on the 5th leg landing side by side with Japan and Dean Barker had to move out of the way and give Nathan Outteridge’s team the advantage and a win for Sweden by 13 sec.
  3. New Zealand wins over France by 2 min 33 sec. The French team’s weaknesses seemed to be losing time with their tacks and jibes.
  4. In Race 4 Great Britain takes the win over Sweden. What a surprise and good for Ben

Ainslie’s team beating the favored Artemis Racing by 11 sec. (Artemis had the most wins during all the practice races before the Qualifiers.)

  5. Next USA wins over New Zealand after a fiercely fought start between the two. NZ was 20 sec. ahead around gate 3 but USA caught up around gate 5 and took the lead and win by 7 sec.
  6. In the final race of the day, Japan wins over Great Britain. A major collision occurred between the two boats 20 sec. prior to the start penalizing Great Britain who could not recover and SoftBank, the newest team, took their first win in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers.

“The racing today was better than I expected,” writes Paul Cayard in Cayard Sailing Reports May 27. “Four of the six matches were very closely contested and five of the six teams seemed fairly even with only the French off the pace. The boats are very fast, 35-40 knots today and it is impressive to watch them live.“

A Double Round Robin with more races to go. Stay tuned to NBC Sport Network as the energy heats up with five teams clamoring to be the Challenger against ORACLE.

Sun., May 28 was a fantastic day for the French! Franck Cammas and his team won their first race. And it was against Artemis Racing, who appeared  to be the strongest team during the practice races. The elation in Franck’s voice reflected the morale boost for his team. The next day on the 29th in Race 1 France beat Great Britain, another of the older favored teams. On June 1 they were actually tied with Artemis Racing!

Fri., June 2 Unfortunately, on Race Day 7 the French, after a mediocre start, made that one bad maneuver on the way to the first gate and could never catch up. New Zealand was quite aggressive with their tacking and foiling with their hulls 100% out of the water (the first team to do it). Amazing to watch the Kiwis cross the finish still at 100% and take the lead in the race standings. And sadly, the French are now out.

At the end of the Qualifiers, the AC World Series final standings will be used to break ties. This could affect which challenger is eliminated, the pairings for the semi-finals and whether a team earns a bonus point for the America’s Cup Match. At the end of the LVACWS Great Britain’s Land Rover Bar had 2 pts. and ORACLE TEAM USA had 1 pt. Watch the Helmsman Conference on Race Day 6, June 1.   Watch the video of two penalties.

One more day of racing and then the America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs begin.

The skipper needs to make split-second calls while operating at high speed and under enormous pressure . A calm demeanour is crucial, as is the ability to work with management and design.

The helmsman handles the steering of the boat via the wheels at the back of each hull. He’s usually the skipper but not always.

The trimmer will look after the massive wingsail, constantly shaping it to generate maximum speed. It’s a specialist job, needing total attention.

The four grinders are basically the engine of these power-hungry beasts and their arms (or legs in Team NZ’s case) will be going like pistons for the entire race.

The tactician is the sailor who reads the elements and pieces together a strategy from them. But the reduction in crew numbers means there’s no luxury of one man bouncing around the trampoline, constantly scouring the waters and opposition to maximise windshifts and opportunities. This person will have to do that while also grinding for long periods.

The bowman will also principally be a grinder but will also need to look after the headsails and provide feedback to help judge distances during the tricky pre-start.

35th America’s Cup Races Begin Saturday! Where to Watch & When

The weather forecast remained poor for the scheduled Opening Day of the 35th America’s Cup on May 26. Due to the strong winds in Bermuda, the America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA) and America’s Cup Race Management (ACRM) postponed day one of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers and the Official Opening Ceremony of the 35th America’s Cup. The skippers held a press conference on May 25, believing they would be racing the next day.

Saturday is completely sold out for viewers in the America’s Cup Village.  “It is great that Saturday is sold out,” said Sir Russell Coutts, ACEA CEO, “and the weather is looking very good for Sunday and beyond, where a full schedule of races is planned. It is shaping up to be incredibly competitive on the water, with the best sailors in the world going head to head, and the America’s Cup Village also looking magnificent.”

And the Village will be energized. Three time Grammy award winning entertainer Haitian rapper and musician, Wyclef Jean will perform on the Main Stage at 5:15pm ET prior to the Official Opening Ceremony of the 35th America’s Cup Sat., May 27 at 8:30pm, in the America’s Cup Village.

Most races are from 1-3pm ET May 27 through June 27, though they are adding an hour to the race schedules on Sat./Sun., May 27/28 due to the loss of May 26 racing. More details here.

America’s Cup Countdown: 14 days to go. ORACLE capsizes during practice.

New ACC capsizing videos below! The America’s Cup competition is about design, technology and sailing expertise. The 35th AC teams will be sailing 15 meter, or about 50 ft., foiling, wing sailed catamarans called the America’s Cup Class (ACC). Each design and engineering team strives to produce the fastest boat.   And they are fast. They travel 3X the speed of wind as they rise above the water. Strategy and design have been adjusted during the practice racing as teams get to know their boats.

In fourteen days the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers begin and will determine which team holds the key. Is it the Kiwis with the pedal grinders, Artemis Racing with its secret weapon. SoftBank Japan’s strategy? In the beginning of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, we had our eye on Land Rover BAR and ORACLE and Emirates Team New Zealand. But during the practice races in Bermuda

Artemis Racing took the lead and SoftBank Team Japan was shining. ETNZ surprised us all on their first day out on the water the last day of that round of practice racing, winning two out of three of their races!

It was amazing watching how fast these ACCs were moving. It’s even more amazing to watch these boats capsize and then right themselves again! Take a look.

ORACLE capsizes. Posted May 8

From ORACLE’s Instagram post: “It takes just seconds to capsize an @AmericasCup Class boat. Today it took us three minutes to get it righted. No injuries, no damage. ”

The fifth series of practice races will take place May 15-19, and during the time in between, protocol prevents teams from racing against each other. There will be an additional three days of practice racing between May 19 and the start of the Qualifiers on May 26.

Foiling Out on the Water in Bermuda

Countdown: Only 28  days until the beginning of the Louis Vuitton 35th America’s Cup Qualifiers in Bermuda.

Emirates Team New Zealand sailing on Bermuda’s Great Sound for their second day of testing on Apr. 23 Photo/Hamish Hooper

The fourth series of practice races are continuing on the Great Sound and will conclude Friday. Artemis seems to dominate in these windy conditions, winning most of the races, including those against ORACLE.  Yesterday ORACLE had dagger board issues and fell out. In the third series of races Artemis had won nine races and lost none. The fifth series of practice races will take place May 15-19, and during the time in between, protocol prevents teams from racing against each other. There will be an additional three days of practice racing between May 19 and the start of the Qualifiers on May 26.

Emirates Team New Zealand just got out on the water last week and have not been racing in these winds this week. According to Richard Gladwell of Sail-World “The situation with ETNZ is that they have had to undergo measurement this week, along with all the other teams. They are still using a set of AC45S foils (daggerboards and rudders) as a temporary measure. They have also indicated that there is still more development to come. If the wind is lighter (8-11kts from the SE), then they may race for the first time on Friday.” Gladwell thinks that Artemis Racing is at the top of their class in 2017!

Update: ETNZ did get out on the water for their first practice races in Bermuda. They beat Artemis Racing. They beat Groupama Team France. And then lost to SoftBank team Japan. Pretty good for their first day of practice races!

Listen to the 35th America’s Cup skippers’ comments about the practice racing: (Jimmy Spithill, USA; Ben Ainslie, GBR; Nathan Outteridge, SWE; Fuku Sofuku, JAP; Franck Cammas, FRA; and  Glenn Ashby, NZ.)

These boats are flying so fast, it appears that the chase boats are having a hard time keeping up.  Take a look.
