Pods of whales have taken up residency in the Monterey Bay, attracted by a profusion of Krill (tiny crustaceans), the mainstay of their diet. Nearly extinct 35 years ago due to whaling, Blue Whales, the largest animals on earth weighing in at about 200 tons and measuring 90 -100 feet long, feed exclusively on Krill. Summer is upon us and there is a preponderance of Blue and Humpback Whales performing now in the Monterey Bay.

For viewing opportunities, contact Monterey Bay Whale Watch in Monterey or Stagnaro Charters out of Santa Cruz.  They also have a restaurant and fish market on the wharf near the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. More info. from our friends at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
